Textual Analysis of Film websites

Similarly to the textual analysis carried out for my film poster and trailer, the next step within my promotion package research is to carry out textual analysis of specific film websites relevant to my film genre. By analyzing specific film websites, it enables me to gain a better understanding of clear, common conventions essential to the website. These common features also allow the audience to recognise the website, as the product which it has been created as. Therefore, these conventions can also be established within my very own production film website. Moreover, the audience can also relate to the film website, as they are already aware of some of the features present on the marketing product. I have carried out textual analysis for films such as: The Devil, The Blair Witch Project and Friday the 13th.  As part of a complete promotion package, I was unable to find ‘The missing’ film website as it is an outdated film. Therefore the film website of ‘The Devil’ is a more contemporary website, of which continue to convey common conventions relevant to the horror genre. Analysis of Textual Analysis of Film websites

Now that three textual analysis have been carried out, there is enough evidence which has been collected in order to generalise and incorporate these common conventions within my own production film website. The three websites analysed as previous mentioned are: The Devil, The Blair Witch Project and Friday the 13th. All of which portray conventions suitable to the horror genre. The use of these conventions conveyed allow the audience to relate with features, which they are able to recognise and find similar, in order to distinguish the marketing product as a film website. Through a comparison of the three different posters: ‘The Devil’, ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Friday the 13th’, its has also been acknowledged the many similarities and differences which each poster consumes depending on the type of style the film is trying to portray. It had been exceptionally interesting how each film website may have contradict some conventions, support theories, as well as includes specific conventions within a website in order to create a personal style. The use of this personal style may also successfully engage the target audience, for example an interesting typeface or colour scheme.  The relevancy of a film website is an extremely productive marketing strategy, as a website is located in a convenient, accessible location, where a wide range of the target demographics which I intend to engage are a mass audience of both, male and female aged sixteen years and above. This specific audience targeted is from middle class, living in England and should have a specific thrill for horror films as well as other individuals. Therefore, the film website allows the marketing product to become more available for the audience which the film is targeting. The film website which I have analysed all pursue the same purpose consuming similar conventions in order to portray the horror genre, of which they all embrace. Some of the common conventions which I accredited were:

  • An enter page of which consisted of a introduction video relevant to the film and it’s narrative.
  • Billing Block
  • Institutional logo
  • A dark colour scheme
  • A large image
  • Visual background image
  • Consistent typography
  • Film name in a large, eye catching text
  • Various navigation bars
  • Inclusion of social networking icons and links
